The earliest academies advanced human knowledge through philosophy, critical thinking and debate. Now, over two millennia later, these methods remain at the core of today's universities and in the curriculum of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
The Dean's Circle is a community of alumni, faculty, staff and friends who, with annual leadership gifts, provide critical support that allows the College to seize opportunities as it strives toward its goal of excellence. To foster programs, scholarships, and research that shape the leaders of tomorrow, the College relies on the generosity of donors.
Study Abroad programs equip students with international experiences, language capabilities and cross-cultural communication skills necessary to succeed in the global economy. Learning how to interact with people from other countries and cultures equips future leaders to address urgent issues shared across borders.
Communication Studies offers many diverse paths for learning in a vast and unique field with unlimited possibilities. Students earn a Bachelors of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in one of three concentrations: Journalism and Broadcasting; Public Relations and Event Management; Professional and Relational Communication. In keeping with the diverse and forward thinking atmosphere of both the University and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, teacher certification is also offered in Professional and Relational Communication or Journalism and Broadcasting.
The Department of Criminal Justice is dedicated to providing a rigorous, student‑centered educational experience that prepares graduates for careers across the criminal justice system. Through a curriculum grounded in theory, research, and applied practice, the department equips students with critical thinking, analytical, and ethical decision‑making skills essential for work in law enforcement, corrections, courts, victim services, crime analysis, and related fields. Faculty bring extensive academic and professional expertise into the classroom, emphasizing experiential learning opportunities such as internships, field experiences, research engagement, and collaboration with justice agencies. The department is committed to student success at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels by fostering mentorship, professional development, and pathways to both practice‑based careers and advanced academic study.
The Department of Public Administration prepares students for leadership roles in government, nonprofit, and public service organizations. Through a curriculum grounded in theory and practical application, students develop skills in policy analysis, management, budgeting, and ethical decision-making. Faculty emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world engagement to prepare students for complex public service environments and to support effective and accountable governance.
English and Languages offers programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts - either with or without secondary school certification - with options in English and Spanish. Additionally, the department offers core curriculum courses in composition and literature, foreign language in Spanish and French and a minor in technical writing. It also provides opportunities for intellectual, literary and cultural enrichment as well as promoting international understanding and involvement for students and faculty with programs such as the Langdon Review of the Arts in Texas and Study Abroad programs in various places throughout the world.
Performing arts and Visual Arts & Design continues to educate the next generation of creative leaders through programs and special events such as recitals, concerts, music festivals, musicals and gallery exhibitions in addition to special performances and demonstrations by visiting artists. The diverse body of more than 350 talented undergraduate students comprises a department which produces careers in art, digital media, music, or theater, all the while priding itself on providing an intimate learning environment where students participate, engage and thrive in their programs.
History, Geography and GIS coordinates quality degree programs to prepare students for a wide range of career options, while also playing a large role in the core curriculum of the University and offers support to a number of other degree programs.
Government, Legal Studies, & Philosophy coordinates offerings in law, politics, public service, community involvement, and civic engagement. Our faculty seek to expand civilized debate, logical reasoning, and ethical citizenship across campus, engage students with the community, and produce scholarly contributions in the disciplines of Legal Studies, Philosophy, and Political Science.
